A little bit about the history of Five Islands Farm...
Five Islands Farm was a working farm, until the 1950's (then known as the Steven's farm, which was settled in the late 1790's). There is a folklore remembrance of the young men in the neighborhood helping out in the gardens, folks having fresh milk, eggs and produce delivered by horse and wagon, or simply stopping by for a cool glass of water and a friendly chat! When Heidi opened the current store in May of 2002 many of those older neighbors who helped out at the farm were still living and enjoyed spending hours reliving their stories and tales of the refreshments stored in the cellar! In it's heyday it was the largest farm in Five Islands. Sadly most of those neighbors have now passed and we miss them dearly, but the stories they told live on.
This small business was created out of the tragedy of 9/11 when the owner lost her job in the airline industry. Determined to fill a need in the community she began creating a small food, garden and produce market. Heidi's love of cheese led her to Maine cheese, which the store began specializing in more than twenty years ago when the Maine Cheese industry was in its early fledgling state. She served on the board of the Maine Cheese Guild for sixteen years, and watched and helped that delicious cottage industry thrive. As time goes on the tiny store continues to change and adapt to the circumstances of limited staffing and the scarcity of product since the pandemic. The season has been shortened to accommodate this, but as always, the goal is to present to you a beautiful atmosphere while providing a special mix of things you need and things that will make your life more beautiful. Please enjoy and indulge yourself at Five Islands Farm a special place built with love of community!
